- Water Wisely
Early morning is best—between 6–10 AM—so water doesn’t evaporate too quickly.
Deep and infrequent watering is better than frequent light watering. Aim for 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week (including rainfall).
Use a rain gauge or tuna can to track how much you’re watering.
- Mow Smart
Don't cut too short. Cut only the top third of the grass blade. Taller grass (around 3 inches) shades roots and prevents weeds.
Keep your mower blade sharp—a dull blade rips the grass and makes it prone to disease.
Change mowing patterns to avoid compacted soil and ruts.
- Feed It Right
Fertilize in spring and fall, ideally with a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer.
Don’t overdo it—too much fertilizer can burn the lawn and promote disease.
- Aerate Annually
Aerate in spring or fall to help soil compaction and help water/nutrients reach the roots.
You can rent a core aerator or hire a service—totally worth it if your soil is dense or you’ve got a lot of foot traffic.
- Overseed Bare Spots
Apply grass seed to bare areas in early fall or spring.
Use the right type of grass for your climate. Either cool or warm season grass
- Watch for Weeds & Pests
Keep weeds in check with pre-emergent herbicides in early spring, and spot-treat with post-emergent herbicides.
Watch for signs of lawn pests like grubs or fungal issues. Such as brown patches or irregular growth.
-Test Your Soil
A soil test can tell you if your lawn needs lime or other amendments. Grass thrives in slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0).
